Vanarama Monthly Awards for September

The winning managers, players and volunteers in September

The League's award winners for September are:

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE- MANAGER OF THE MONTH

Graham Alexander (Salford City)

There was one word being used more and more as last month rumbled on. Ominous.

Otherwise known as menacing, threatening or even dangerous. It summed up the situation quite well.

Salford City didn’t make the start they would have liked after a somewhat rambunctious summer which they recruited strongly.

One of their close season captures was a new manager. Graham Alexander knew the scrutiny would be intense and a slow start had them playing catch up.

But September saw them lay down a marker. Following an early draw, wins over AFC Fylde, Maidstone United, Bromley, Boreham Wood, Hartlepool United and Maidenhead United made it six wins from six.

Alexander is starting to really show why the club made such a big decision back in May.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE- PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Marvin Ekpiteta (Leyton Orient)

The life of a defender can often be a frustrating one. After all, you’re doing the dirty work while the players further up the field get all the goals - and most of the credit!

When it comes to awards, things aren’t usually all that different. The accolades tend to always head to the attackers.

The boys at the back must often feel like an afterthought. Well not anymore!

Marvin Ekpiteta has been simple sensational for Leyton Orient, and even with his team firing in the goals the centre-back has stood out.

Orient won five from seven in September, scoring 17 times. They only conceded four and the 23-year-old got himself on the scoresheet against Braintree Town.

This defender has his day, and Ekpiteta’s manager Justin Edinburgh says he is only going to get better.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE- VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Kerry Evans (Wrexham)

Kerry Evans of Wrexham has won September’s Volunteer of the Month for the National League.

Kerry is the club’s Disabled Liaison Officer and, having been only appointed in January, has taken to the role like a duck to water. A wheelchair user herself, Kerry personally meets and welcomes disabled fans at home games.

One of first changes she made after taking the role was to reinstate a service for disabled fans on matchdays for those who wish to purchase food/drinks and have them brought out to pitch side. She has also improved the website with more specific matchday information and the process for free carer tickets, as well as helping to make the stadium an autistic friendly one in conjunction with the NAS (National Autistic Society).

Kerry’s other initiatives include changing room tours at the club’s open day, ponchos to keep fans dry and arranging travel to away games. She’s already planning a second viewing platform and continues to make the club as disabled friendly as she possibly can.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH- MANAGER OF THE MONTH

Jason Ainsley (Spennymoor Town)

Jason Ainsley may have been in charge for 12 years, but even he won’t have had too many months better than the last. After an unconvincing August, he masterminded a Spennymoor Town revival in September.

Now fourth in the National League North, Town actually started last month slowly with a 1-1 draw against Southport.

That proved to be a spark as they secured maximum points after that, starting with a 2-0 win over Leamington, followed by a 3-1 victory versus Nuneaton Borough.

Perhaps their best performance and result of the season came against Hereford last weekend. Ainsley said the 3-0 away win against the Bulls would live long in the memory.

The National League’s longest serving manager was quoted earlier in the month saying: “we are always likely to score goals”.

How right he was. They averaged over two goals per game in their September fixtures and are now the third highest scoring side in the division.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH - PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Ed Williams (Kidderminster Harriers)

What a month it’s been for Harriers’ midfield maestro Ed Williams.

With Kidderminster sitting proudly in second, the 23-year-old’s form also piqued the interest of England C manager Paul Fairclough, who selected Williams for their upcoming friendlies this month.

Harriers may have lost for the first time this season during the past few weeks, but elsewhere it’s been a perfect month. An impressive 12 points from 15 has been backed up with a resounding win in the FA Cup.

Williams has more than contributed with six goals in five games throughout September, the summer signing has helped his side to wins against Blyth Spartans and Altrincham, along with a crucial goal as they eased York City aside.

But the stand-out moment has to be an incredible solo effort against Boston United – picking up the ball before beating two defenders and firing low past the Pilgrims’ keeper.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH- VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Roy Hackford (Boston United)

Roy Hackford has won Volunteer of the Month for Boston United in the National League North.

Roy is invaluable to the football club and performs many voluntary tasks every season. On home matchdays, Roy acts as a host of the Boardroom and welcomes all visiting Club Directors and guests, making sure their needs are met.

He is very influential around the club on non-matchdays too, carrying out the maintenance tasks that are required to keep the stadium up-and-running and, during the last two summers, has overseen a re-paint of the whole stadium.

On away match days, he helps to transport kit and equipment and helps other volunteers to meet the team coach.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH- MANAGER OF THE MONTH

Ian Allinson (St. Albans City)

Ian Allinson and the first few months of the season have a special relationship. It’s the results post New Year where the problems lie.

For the last three seasons now, the Saints have started superbly only to fall away in the second half of the season. Allinson is determined for that not to be the case this time around.

In September they were superb, securing maximum points from the second month of the campaign.

They knocked three promotion chasers off their perch with Dartford, Concord Rangers and Chelmsford City all coming undone, with a 4-2 win at East Thurrock completing the set.

St. Albans scored 12 times, averaging three goals a game. They ended the month in sixth place, just four points shy of leaders Billericay Town.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH - PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Jack Turner (Slough Town)

The Rebels had a moment of blind panic in September. It spoke volumes for how important Jack Turner is to the league’s newcomers.

The goalkeeper picked up a slight elbow injury and was a doubt for the FA Cup tie with Sholing. Problem is, the stopper is so reliable Slough don’t have a back-up.

Joint manager Neil Baker took drastic action. He pleaded for a non-cup tied ‘keeper to come forward on Twitter - and the story made national headlines!

Turner’s form in the National League South has been a big part of the reason why they have not looked at all out of place since promotion.

In particular, his save in the 1-0 win at Chelmsford City last month was described “as one of the best I have ever seen” by veteran midfielder Scott Davies.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SOUTH- VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Tim Clark (Gloucester City)

Tim Clark has won Volunteer of the Month for Gloucester City in the Vanarama National League South.

After 60 years as a supporter, Tim’s relentless love of Gloucester City has led to his production of a comprehensive archive of Gloucester City history, miscellany and numerous volumes of literature about the 135 years of the Club’s history.

Tim also manages and organises the club’s team of turnstile operators and is an invaluable member of the Club.

“Every Club needs a Tim Clark”, said Vice Chairman, Chris Gage.

“We are honoured to have him at ours”.
