A superb early goal by Adam Campbell set Quakers up for a deserved victory at Bootham Crescent -- only their first since 1991, and their eighth in 57 visits stretching back a century.
Quakers played some superb football in the first half with a very attacking line up, and they could easily have been 3-0 or 4-0 up at one stage, to such an extent that York were booed off at half time by their own fans.
The victory ended York's unbeaten home record, and was Quakers second on the road this season.
Quakers nearly scored in the first minute, Stephen Thompson found Adam Campbell, and he struck a low shot that Peter Jameson just touched around the post, then Jameson just managed to get to a Sean Reid through ball before Thompson.
Then some great interplay between Campbell and Reid ending with new signing Reid hitting a 25 yarder that flew just wide of the right hand post.
Quakers took the lead on 9 minutes. Ben Hedley played the ball in from the right and found Campbell, who turned and hit a right foot shot that flew into the top left corner for his eighth goal of the season.
It should have been 2 on 13 minutes when Campbell robbed Jameson inside the area, but Joe Tait managed to clear off the line.
York replied with a low shot by Elliott Durrell that Elliott touched around the post, then Elliott somehow managed to keep Kempster’s close range effort out from a left wing cross.
But at the other end Campbell chased a long ball, and Jameson came 40 yards out of his goal to successfully tackle him.
On 28 minutes, Hedley picked up a pass from Sean Reid, cut in from the right and curled a left foot shot that Jameson saved.
And on the half hour, Thompson crossed from the left for Reid to nod down for Rivers to volley over from ten yards.
Joe Wheatley then played a 1-2 with Campbell and fired a powerful right foot shot that Jameson beat away.
Reid then found Thompson with a great lay off, and Thompson struck the post from 20 yards, then Campbell, from a tight angle, curled the rebound wide.
It had been a great first half for Quakers, and hopefully they wouldn't regret those missed chances.
York City 0 Darlington 1
York made three subs at half time , and had more possession without forcing Elliott into any real action.
Quakers had the first real chance of the second half when Rivers moved in from the right past two men, played a return ball with Campbell, and hit a left foot shot that Jameson saved under his bar.
Campbell was then denied when he controlled a Reid flick on, and Jameson saved at his feet.
York had a chance to level when Jordan Burrow found Alex Kempster just inside the area, but he pulled his shot wide.
Liddle then popped up in the York box from a Thompson pass and fired a yard wide of the post
City then hit the bar with a header by Burrow from a right wing cross as the tension mounted.
Sub Donawa came on for Darlington and made a great run that ended with a shot that Jameson fumbled, and the unlucky Campbell couldn’t quite turn the ball home.
York piled on the pressure in the closing minutes, Langstaff hit the side netting from a left wing cross, and Elliott blocked a shot from Green on his line.
But Quakers held on to end York's unbeaten record and collect their second away win of the season.
