Three goals in a strong second half

Redcar Athletic 0 Darlington 4

  • Six triallists in the game for Quakers
  • Goal for new signing Dylan Stephenson
  • Clean sheet for new keeper Bobby Jones

Quakers began their pre season friendly programme with a convincing 4-0 away win on their first ever visit to Redcar Athletic.

The home side walked away with the NPL East title by some distance last season to stand one level below Quakers, so the visitors will be pleased with four goals without reply.

Quakers got off to a great start by scoring inside the first five minutes, when Ben Hedley’s inswinging corner from the left hand side and went past several players into the net although there may have been a deflection along the way.

Redcar, with former Darlington hero Kevin Burgess in their squad, probed the Darlington defence and Bobby Jones made a good one handed save.

Under 23 player Jesse Nelson nearly made the score 2-0, but he put his effort wide from a Max Kilsby pass.

Quakers made several changes at half time, and from then on were too strong for the Steelmen, with Max Howells stretching them.

Dylan Stephenson went close twice, while Ellis Stanton was just off target before Quakers went 2-0 up on 67 minutes, when Mark Beck sidefooted against the post from a right wing cross, and strike partner Stephenson tapped in.

The third goal arose from the best move of the game when Howells, who caused the Marske defence all sorts of problems down the left, gave his man the slip once again and set up Ellis Stanton to sidefoot firmly home.

Beck was denied twice, before triallist E headed in a corner right at the end.

Quakers’ next friendly is away to Stockton Town on Tuesday evening.
