Extensive summer works completed at Blackwell Meadows as preparations continue for the 2026/27 campaign
Work has continued throughout the summer to prepare the Blackwell Meadows pitch for the start of the 2026/27 season.
The main renovation work was carried out in May and included scarifying the surface, deep aeration using a Verti-Drain, disc seeding and the application of 120 tonnes of topdressing. Sixteen bags of seed were used, alongside fertiliser, wetting agents and other treatments designed to support grass establishment and root development.
The pitch also received a pass with a Verti-Quake to help connect the drainage channels beneath the surface and prepare it for the wetter months ahead.
The Darlington Rugby Football Club grounds team has worked hard throughout the close season to manage the renovation programme and support the development of the new grass. The renovation work is jointly funded by Darlington Rugby Football Club and Darlington Football Club.
Blackwell Meadows is currently scheduled to host 44 first-team fixtures during the 2026/27 season. 26 Darlington FC matches and 18 Darlington Rugby Football Club fixtures. That total covers confirmed fixtures only and could increase through cup and play-off matches. Usage will be particularly high during the winter months, when poorer growing conditions make recovery more difficult, underlining the challenge faced by the grounds team in maintaining a shared playing surface throughout the season.
The prolonged warm and dry weather has presented additional challenges, particularly in the area alongside the touchline nearest the clubhouse. Additional irrigation equipment is being sourced to provide more water to that section while the current conditions continue.
Overall, the pitch is progressing well and preparations remain on track ahead of our opening home pre-season fixture against Carlisle United on Tuesday 21 July. The surface will continue to establish and develop during the opening weeks of the season.
Longer-term pitch planning
Alongside the annual renovation programme, Darlington Football Club and Darlington Rugby Football Club commissioned an independent assessment of the pitch and the options available to improve it over the longer term.
The consultant’s report has now been received, and both clubs will review its findings together before agreeing the most appropriate next steps and considering any further investment in the playing surface.
We would like to thank the Darlington Rugby Football Club grounds team for their continued work throughout the summer.
