The boss reflects on Jack's development and his step into full time football

Darlington manager Steve Watson has praised Jack Maskell’s attitude, development and work ethic following the striker’s move to Barnet.

Jack joined the Quakers from Dunston in the summer of 2024 and made significant progress during his two seasons with the club, earning the opportunity to become a full time professional in the Football League.

Steve said: “What can I say about Jack? He has been an absolute pleasure to work with.

“When he first came in, he probably found the step up quite difficult, but he quickly understood what it took to be a footballer. He changed some of his habits and became very, very fit and aggressive without the ball.

“He is a bit of a one off when it comes to his work ethic. He has done very well here and, in his first opportunity at this level, he was constantly improving.

“He obviously still has more improving to do, but that will be much easier for him in a full time football environment.”

Steve explained that the club had always been committed to helping Jack progress and would not stand in his way when the right opportunity arrived.

“The promise we made to Jack when he came here was that we would improve him and, when an opportunity came for him to step higher, we would try not to stand in his way, as long as it was right for the club.

“This move is right for the club. We have done well for Jack, he has done well for us, and now we have to move on and find the next one.”

Steve also revealed that he spent time with Jack before the move to ensure it was the player’s own decision.

“I spent a full day with Jack and took him to St James’ Park for the final game of the season. I wanted to make sure this was exactly what he wanted to do and that it was not anybody else’s idea.

“He was very open and honest about the fact that he wanted the move to happen. He loves what Darlington has done for him and he will always have an affinity for the club, but ultimately he has gone on to become a professional footballer in the Football League.

“That is another feather in Darlington’s cap. Alongside players such as Charlie Lennon, I think people can trust us with their young players and know that we will give them opportunities and help them develop.

“We wish Jack all the very best and look forward to bringing the next one through.”
